Incredible South African run-chase breaks records in Centurion

On Sunday in Centurion, South Africa tied the series with the West Indies by staging a record run chase in T20Is.

Despite giving up 258 runs with the ball, South Africa produced a thrilling run chase, led by Quinton de Kock’s first T20I century, to set a record for the biggest run chase in T20Is.

De Kock and Reeza Hendricks got South Africa’s innings off to a fast start by scoring 102 in the first six overs of the run chase, the highest score by any side in the Powerplay in T20 Internationals.

After the first partnership of 152 runs, which took just 10.5 overs, South Africa became the clear favorite to win the match.

Aiden Markram, the captain, maintained the carnage to lead his team to a remarkable victory even though the visitors attempted a comeback by dismissing Rossouw, Hendricks, and Miller in relatively fast succession.

In a T20I match against Serbia in 2022, Bulgaria held the previous record for the highest successful run-chase, chasing down 243 in 19.4 overs.

With this, South Africa has now achieved the highest run-chase success rate in ODIs and T20Is.

Earlier, West Indies had achieved their best score in T20Is thanks to a record-setting 39-ball century from Johnson Charles. However, it simply wasn’t enough to secure a victory.
