Before his thumb injury, the southpaw struck a century against Australia.
The furious opener will miss the championship tournament.
Dhawan explained his absence to Aaj Tak, saying, “Cricket does this regularly. Perhaps this happened to many others besides me.
The rise of Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan has strengthened the fight for the openers’ slot and to accompany captain Rohit Sharma at the top of the order.
Dhawan’s last ODI outing for India was in December 2022 against Bangladesh.
Once my form dropped in a couple of series, they gave Shubman an opportunity, and he delivered. It’s normal.
After Ishan Kishan’s double-century against Bangladesh, I worried about being dropped.
Dhawan said he would pick Gill over him if he were the selection since Gill has also been great.
As mentioned, [Shubman Gill] excels in Tests and T20s. I played fewer international matches than him. I would select Shubman.”
The Indian Premier League starts in time for Dhawan’s 2023 World Cup hopes. Punjab Kings captain Dhawan may return to the ODI team if he performs well.
