MADRID: Real Madrid lost 3-2 to Villarreal in La Liga a week before their vital Champions League game against Chelsea.
Real Madrid’s chances of winning the title again were ruined. When Pau Torres scored an own goal early in the game. Samuel Chukwueze of Villarreal stole the show with a great game. He scored twice and curled in the game-winning goal.
Vinicius Junior scored an excellent goal for Real Madrid, but it wasn’t enough to win them the game.
Still, the Italian coach kept Vinicius, Rodrygo, and Karim Benzema on the field, hoping to take the lead immediately. Villarreal’s veteran goalkeeper Pepe Reina made two fantastic saves to stop Benzema and Rodrygo, and Thibaut Courtois made two saves to stop Alex Baena.
After Nacho Fernandez looked dead because of how well he played, Chukwueze hit a clean shot past Courtois to tie the game. Vinicius scored a beautiful goal early in the second half to put Real Madrid ahead of Aissa Mandi. He did this by dribbling well. But Chukwueze scored his second goal of the game from outside the region. It curled into the top corner, ending Real Madrid’s hopes of getting a draw.
Real Madrid fouled in the last seconds. However, the call was then changed when VAR replays were looked at. Real Madrid is 12 points behind Barcelona, so they won’t be able to defend their La Liga title.
Villarreal is now in sixth place, two points ahead of Real Betis. Coach Quique Setien said Chukwueze is an “excellent player who gives us a lot” because he plays well.
Lucas Vazquez, a defender for Real Madrid, said that the league is hard, but he was hopeful about the team’s chances in two other tournaments.
